Amazon.co.uk Review
A new Halo 3 game is about to hit, but the Master Chief is nowhere to be seen. This all-new first person shooter has evolved into something much bigger than a mere standalone expansion pack and is now a fully-fledged prequel to the last game.

Discover more about the build-up to the classic Halo 3
ODST stands for Orbital Drop Shock Troopers
You no longer play as the indestructible Master Chief
Sgt Johnson is available as a pre-order bonus character

You no longer play as a Spartan super soldier, but as a sort of futuristic paratrooper with less high tech armour and abilities. Much of the game is told in flashback, as you search for your missing teammates in New Mombasa and discover more of the backstory of the Halo universe.

Of course this being Halo the multiplayer is just as important as the story campaign, with the basic modes being identical to Halo 3 and using all 24 current maps. New mode Firefight though is a four player co-op mode similar to Gears of War 2's Horde - perfect for Halo fans looking for more action.

Key Features
  • Semi-super soldier: Get used to a dirty, more tactical style of warfare as you join the elite ODST in a story set two weeks prior to the events of Halo 3.
  • Halo world: For the first time ever in a Halo game you can explore an open world environment, with the freedom to go anywhere and use any vehicle.
  • Classic action: Fight in the revamped multiplayer mode from Halo 3, with access to all 24 maps released so far, including all downloadable map packs.
  • War without end: New Firefight multiplayer modes introduces four play co-operative action against an unending wave of Covenant forces.
About the Developer: Bungie
This U.S. studio had been around for ten years before they created mega hit Halo. Ironically in their early days they were know for their Mac-only games such as Marathon, as well as strategy series Myth. They were bought by Microsoft in 2000, but in 2007 they became independent again.

3 out of 5 stars Love Halo, but I was disappointed with this :(   October 20, 2009

I love the Halo series, and was eagerly anticipating the release of this. Was enjoying the first-person solo game of it, but like other reviewers, found it very repetitive after a while. I thought I may have been 25% through the game, when the credits rolled after one of the missions. My jaw hit the floor. It's SO short! Granted you get a multi-player disk with it too, but having already paid hard earned cash on downloading new maps for Halo 3, I've not found a massive difference in the new Multiplayer disk with ODST. Granted I'm still playing on-line with it, so we'll see if something brand new appears, but my hopes aren't great.
In summary, if you're a Halo 3 fan, save your money and borrow a copy of ODST from a mate and you'll be finished it in a few days.

This is a game i would recommend to anyone, if you own halo 3 but don't own any of the maps, this is a great route to getting them, it is alot cheaper than paying for Microsoft points and you get a extra campaign and Firefight mode, Recommended.

Well, there is not a lot I can say about Halo 3 ODST, but there is an awful lot I can say. As you probably know, many critics said that there was no substance to this game and it is just an add on to halo 3, but it is so much more than that. I remember reading on a website that said that Bungie only had about 6 months to about a year to create the game. There is a very moving storyline about the last remaining ODST team led by Gunnery Sergeant Eddie Buck tring to protect the African Megacity Of New Mombasa being taken over by the Covenant. It has relatively short missions but all make you feel rewarded, taking out so many Aliens on your own. All in all a very good game for the short amount of time Bungie had to spend on it, and not forgeting the amazing Halo 3 multiplayer disc, with over 20 multiplayer maps, at least 15 different gametypes and loads of online fun. But to fully experience the game, buy it!!!

Roll on Reach!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A flawed gem, but a gem nonetheless   June 21, 2010

The bottom line is this: if you liked the original halo and you have friends, you will love this

yes, the campaign is short, but dont forget this was only intended to be an add on for halo 3. The multiplayer disc and new maps offer the usual halo 3 multiplayer madness, and the mythic map pack adds new possibilities to forge mode, which will consume your life for then next year or so.

On the campaign disc things as are a bit short but so so so sweet. The story, though slightly obscured to begin with requires a bit of attention from the player, but its solid and helps push the missions forward in a logical and tension building manner. The change of pace between the new mombassa hub and flashback missions is a refreshing take on storytelling and the dialouge and health system add a very vulnerable and human appeal to the game, and the graphics are a step up from halo 3, with the visr effects and improved HUD allowing the player to use stealth to good effect.

The musical score in ODST is by far and away the partypiece of the game. Taking a very different direction to the classic halo themes, the ODST soundtrack is moody and dark with a film noir/brass instrument feel and that is paced to perfection, really rising to the occasion during the action packed sequences with a guitar fuelled set that is truly memorable.

Firefight also adds a new element to halo playing, demanding every ounce of skill of the player to survive for as long as possible against an endless covanent horde. Its fast paced combat, but certainly the presence of drones and repeating waves of enemies do take the gleam off the game after 30 hours of play or so.

Where the life of ODST lies though is in its co operative modes, and its seemingly endless customisation. The campaign with up to four people over xbox live or ideally system link provides one of the best co operative experiences that the 360 offers. 4 players in campaign or firefight allows true teamwork and the ability to customise the experience with skulls, competitive meta game scoring and plenty of in game easter eggs and collectibles.

In conclusion the multiplayer disc is what you expect from classic halo mulitplayer, adding more maps and forge items for more madness, and the campaign disc serves up a very moody and classy experience, adding firefight to an already impressive lineup. If you like halo, you will love this. Its the change of pace that the halo series needed, and will certain push all the right buttons and certainly fill the time between now and halo reach, if thats what your looking for

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad but Not Good   December 8, 2009

Not too sure this game was worth the £35 I payed for it. When I got it I started it up only to find that it didn't actually have it's own multi player, just an extra disk for Halo 3 Multi player with all of the DLC (Downloadable Content). Campaign was very short, took about 4-5 hours for me to complete on normal difficulty and the only other extra feature, Firefight, wasn't much of a seller either.

After I had completed the campaign for the first time, the game slowly lost it's "wow" factor, coming to the point where it was only worth playing for one quick 30-45 match of firefight with my friends.

This game is not really worth buying unless your are a massive Halo fan or if you have Xbox Live Gold so that you are able to play it with your friends. However, if not, this game isn't that worth buying.

Even though I enjoy playing the game ever once in a while, I couldn't play it repeatedly like Modern Warfare 2, or Grand Theft Auto IV. However, it is an extra bonus to get all the downloadable content free with the extra Halo 3 Multi player disk, although this disk doesn't contain the campaign so it doesn't act as a complete copy of Halo 3, however I don't even play the Halo 3 campaign any more, just the Multi player and custom games.

If I had the option, I wouldn't mind sending the game back so that I could get a refund as I don't even want to play it any more.

Overall, an OK product as the Halo 3 disk does give it a boosted start rating for me as it is a helpful extra disk, however the new game itself isn't that impressive.

Not a good addition to the Halo 3 franchise.
